Sharing the Community's History

The Chinese Historical Society has since undertaken many efforts to support its goals of collecting, preserving, and sharing Chinese American history.  Led by a diverse group of members, CHSSC has planned and implemented a wide slate of activities. Here you will find a list of our accomplishments.

Gow, William and Jenny Cho, Revisiting East Adams.  Chinese Historical Society of Southern California (2004). Purchase at Our Bookstore

Revisiting East Adams captures the history of a Chinese American community in downtown Los Angeles from the 1930s to 1950s.  During this period, the intersection of East Adams and San Pedro Street was home to a vibrant Chinese American community that preserved Chinese culture through social and religious organization such as Chinese Presbyterian Church, Chinese schools and various youth groups.  East Adams was also a self-sustaining community whose residents earned a living by working at local businesses such as City Market on 9th street, the CFO gas station, and the Kwong Hing Lung grocery store.  The stories of these former Chinese residents expand our understanding of the history of Los Angeles.

The CHSSC has actively participated in many community activities such as:

    • Our flag unit has been leading the parade in LA Chinatown every Chinese New Year since 1976.
    • We have marched in the Alhambra Chinese New Year parade and the Bok Kai Festival in Marysville, California.
    • The CHSSC co-sponsored the revival of the traditional Moon Festival.
    • We have assisted with the Chinatown 10K Run
    • Participated in the annual Lotus Festival, and the LA Conservancy’s 25th Anniversary Celebration at Union Station.
    • Organized an annual Ch’ing Ming festival at Evergreen Cemetery.
    • Participated in the 100th anniversary at Lang Station in 1976.
    • Participated in the Archives Bazaar at USC
    • Participated in History Day LA

The CHSSC has networked with other communities and organizations through field trips to historic Chinese American sites, ranging from California, to Mexico, to Hawaii and the Golden Spike National Historic Site in Utah.

We are involved with, and support community organizations such as:

As we look to the future, let’s build on the contributions of those who came before us, and work hard to preserve and share our cultural heritage!
