Rural Chinatowns and Hidden Sites

The 1882 Foundation and the Utah State Historic Preservation Office are cosponsoring a conference about U.S. Chinatowns in rural and remote places—and the haunting landscapes and streetscapes preserved in their place. Many are abandoned ghost towns; others are archeological sites with few aboveground remains. They present fascinating histories of boom and bust, angst and exclusion, and triumph and resilience—as well as enormous preservation questions and opportunities.

Join us in Salt Lake City for two days of paper presentations and one day of touring—either to the ghost town of Terrace, Utah, or to the Golden Spike National Historical Park.  For those interested in coming early (June 18), staff of the FamilySearch Library will provide an orientation to the library’s resources—with a focus on Asian resources.

The presentations will be far ranging, covering Chinatowns from the northwest to the southeast U.S. that were spawned by railroad construction, mining, agriculture, and more. Discussions will capture social issues, including women and labor history; discrimination and violence; and the ongoing search for equality and acceptance. Innovative methods for presenting these histories to the public, integrating vanished histories with typical preservation programs, and exploring this past through film, oral histories, and archival collections will also be featured.

Paper sessions will be held at the FamilySearch Library at 35 North West Temple Street. The conference hotel is nearby at the Salt Lake Plaza SureStay Hotel, 122 West South Temple.
