Giving Tuesday 2023
The Chinese Historical Society of Southern California, Inc. (CHSSC) was organized in November 1975. The mission of the Chinese Historical Society is to bring together people with a mutual interest in the important history and historical role of Chinese and Chinese Americans in Southern California.
We have a vast collection of archival materials, and our primary goal is to preserve our assets and share them with the public. Among our most endangered treasures is our collection of phonograph records. Most of these recordings are of Cantonese opera made between the 1910s and the 1950s, distributed by companies across the U.S. as well as China, Germany, and the U.K. Some of our rarest records were made by the very first Chinese- language radio station in North America.
Preserving these recordings will not only help us preserve the Cantonese language but give insight into Cantonese culture in the early twentieth century as well as provide evidence of the distribution networks that served a wide Chinese diaspora. Working with the California State Library’s California Revealed program, we have recently secured funding to digitize some of our records. But due to the rarity and fragile nature of our collection, we would like to preserve all of them as soon as possible. Luckily, the State Library will give us their bulk pricing rate if we can fund the rest of the project.
With your help CHSSC will be able to save these important cultural artifacts and share them with our community for generations to come.
