Volunteer Opportunities

The operation of the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California is dependent on the time and skills of many volunteers. Please join our team!

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Docent Training | Become a teacher and guide

One of the cornerstones of our community outreach is leading walking tours of Chinatown Los Angeles. During the tours, which last from 60 to 90 minutes, we point out locations relevant to the history of Los Angeles and Southern California. The sites and background reveal the important role Chinese played in the development of the region.

We offer a formal docent training program, complete with an informational packet. We also take prospective docents out for walks to show them key aspects of the tour, and we invite them to accompany our experienced docents to witness and develop a delivery style. Being a docent is a lot of fun! You get to meet people from all walks of life, such as exchange students from around the world, gifted students from other parts of the country, young children just beginning their school careers and Elderhostel groups with inquisitive senior citizens.

Anyone interested in this unique opportunity to gain valuable public-speaking, teaching and community-service experience is urged to submit the form below or call (323) 222-0856. We especially need docents who have time during the weekdays, when many of the local school children come by on the busloads craving information about Chinatown.
