China Society January Program with Speaker Devin Fitzgerald
The presenting speaker will be Devil Fitzgerald. Devin Fitzgerald is
the Curator of Rare Books and the History of Printing at the UCLA Library Special
Collections. He has a PhD in history and East Asian Languages. This is Devin’s description of his program on printing in the 16 th and 17 th Century. “I will introduce three major aspects of printing in pre-modern China and Europe. The talk will begin with a discussion of papermaking and will highlight the major differences between Chinese paper production and European paper production. Part two of the talk will compare changes in Western letter forms to the evolution of Chinese calligraphic styles. In the final part of the talk I will describe the important differences between printing technologies in China and Europe.”
The Chinese Historical Society of Southern California is co-sponsoring and aiding this program.
