In The Story of the Stone (also known as The Dream of the Red Chamber) by Cao Xueqin (1715 ?–ca. 1763), the garden is a space for reading, painting, poetry composition, and opera. Dr. Wai-yee Li, professor of Chinese literature at Harvard University, will examine how different types of literary activities in the garden, ranging from the lyrical to the social and from the introspective to the performative, are defined through aspects of garden design and spatial setting.
This event will be held online via Zoom. A Zoom link will be sent to attendees in their registration confirmation email.
